About Us - Board of Directors

 Betsy Wharton - Board Member

Wharton served on the Port Angeles City Council from 2005 through 2009. She also serves on the Board of the Feiro Marine Life Center, she is the President of the Port Angeles Farmer’s Market Board, and she is a regular parent volunteer at Franklin Elementary School.

Originally from the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland, she has lived in Port Angeles since 2001.
“My husband and I chose Port Angeles because of its proximity to nature, its small town friendliness and its good school district,” says Wharton.

The Land Trust’s focus on protecting farmland and wildlife habitat attracted Wharton to the organization, she said.

Wharton’s educational and professional background is in nursing.
She has a bachelor's degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham and a Masters in Nursing from University of Tennessee.

Her nursing career included direct patient care and administrative positions. She worked in a refugee clinic on the Pakistani Afghan border as well as serving a year on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona.

In Port Angeles, she worked at First Step Family Support Center doing community outreach nursing with families with newborns.

She co-authored Daughters of the Desert: Stories of Remarkable Women from the Jewish, Christian and Muslim Traditions.

She and her husband Rob Epstein, M.D., a partner at Family Medicine of Port Angeles, are parents of a 17-year-old son, Forrest, and a 10-year-old daughter, Maya.
