About Us -
Our History
Our organization was pioneered by several
Clallam County friends and neighbors who wished to protect the:
|
•
|
Amazing marine shoreline |
|
•
|
Spectacular wildlife habitat |
|
•
|
Magnificent forests |
|
•
|
Productive farmlands |
|
•
|
Significant cultural heritage. |
Conservation of these special values ensures
a healthy and special place for all residents of and visitors to
Clallam County.
The founders realized that after land is developed for
commercial purposes, it is unlikely to be returned to its
pristine state and dedicated their efforts to preserve as much
open space as possible. Many of the original founders continue
to show strong support. Attorney, Gary Colley, is now our
treasurer and legal advisor. Former Forestry Instructor, John
Willits, participated in our first conservation easement. He’s
still an active Board member and a strong voice on the Conservation Committee.
NOLT’s land conservation activities were handled by volunteers
for many years. In response to increasing activity and community
interest, NOLT hired its first full-time staff member in 1998.
Until just recently, NOLT staff consisted of a full time
Conservation Director and two part time positions; Stewardship
Manager and an Office Manager. These positions were supervised
by the volunteer Board of Directors. Thanks to funding in 2007
from the Benjamin N. Phillips Memorial Fund, NOLT was able to
hire its first full-time Executive Director in 2008.
To date, we have conserved more than 2,500 acres.
