North Olympic Land Trust Annual Meeting
Saturday - March 13, 2010
2:00 – 4:00 PM
Peninsula College – Pirate Union Building (PUB)
The Boards of Directors of North Olympic Land Trust (NOLT) and
Friends of the Fields (FoF) have voted to merge operations into
a single entity. This merger requires approval from our members.
We will ask our membership for an approval vote at our upcoming
Annual Meeting.
The merger of our two organizations would create a unified and
efficient program focused on sustaining agriculture in Clallam
County. The merged NOLT organization would form a new committee
called “Friends of the Fields.” This committee will be
responsible for prioritizing farmland acquisition, farmland
development rights acquisition, and activities or projects
directly associated with sustainable agriculture here in the
County. A Farmland Conservation Specialist would be hired to
help facilitate the Committee.
Our organizations have long worked together on farmland
conservation. FoF has led fundraising activities and prepared
grants to protect 151 acres of farmland in the Sequim-Dungeness
Valley. NOLT has provided the legal agreements known as
conservation easements that permanently preserve 111 of those
acres for agriculture and also protect such other qualities as
wildlife habitat, timber, scenic vistas, open space and cultural
heritage. NOLT has also assumed the responsibility for making
sure the easements are upheld in perpetuity.
Besides the merger approval vote, our annual meeting will also
include a recap of our 2009 accomplishments and a featured
speaker, American Farmland Trust’s Pacific Northwest States
Director Don Stuart. Mr. Stuart will discuss what we need to do
to transform the role of agriculture in our society to make this
industry not just environmentally sustainable, but also
economically and politically sustainable. He will also address
what this transformation can mean, not just to farmers but to
all of us. Lastly, he will discuss the critical role that land
trusts play in making this happen.
To help with planning, we would appreciate your RSVP by calling
the office at 417-1815 or email info@nolt.org. We look forward
to seeing you there!
