StoryWalk® – We Are Water Protectors

November 3, 2024 November 30, 2024

UPDATE: Due to vandalism, a number of story book pages were missing from the trail in early November. Signs were reinstalled Nov. 18 by volunteers, after which visitors to the Lyre Conservation Area are asked to call the North Olympic Land Trust at 360-417-1815 or email info@northolympiclandtrust.org if they notice any issues.

Enjoy picture book pages along the trail at the Lyre Conservation Area, November 3 to November 30.

This family-friendly trail and story are a great way to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, National StoryWalk® Week, and the 10-year anniversary of the North Olympic Land Trust’s stewardship of the Lyre Conservation Area.

About We Are Water Protectors

Inspired by the many Indigenous-led movements across North America, Caldecott Award-winning We Are Water Protectors issues an urgent rallying cry to safeguard the Earth’s water from harm and corruption. The bold and lyrical picture book was written by Carole Lindstrom (Anishinaabe/Metis) and vibrantly illustrated by Michaela Goade (Tlingit and Haida).

About the Lyre Conservation Area

The Lyre Conservation Area is located on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Indigenous S’Klallam and Makah people, who have lived on the North Olympic Peninsula since time immemorial and who continue to lead in environmental stewardship.

The Lyre Conservation Area is a 280-acre property just east of the Lyre River on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This Conservation Area features the estuary at the mouth of the Lyre River, streams, tide-flats, kelp beds and a ½ mile of Strait of Juan de Fuca shoreline. It also includes a large diverse upland forest as well as excellent habitat for salmon and a variety of migratory and resident birds and wildlife. Find more information about the trail and accessing the trailhead here.
